We're excited to announce that Weike Qu will be the speaker at VCD's October 3rd technical talk! The Doors open 5:30, and the talk starts 6:00 at the Concept Lab, in Fast + Epp's Vancouver office.
Weike is a structural engineer turned developer and the co-founder of Stride, a modern technical documentation and calculation software. Wieke summarizes his talk as below:
“The more I think about structural engineering as a discipline, the more similarities I see with software engineering. If code lies at the heart of software engineering projects, then calcs certainly lie at the heart of structural engineering projects.
If so, why is there such a huge discrepancy between the tooling available to help out structural engineers versus software? Why are structural engineers' tools still stuck in the Windows 95 era of terrible UX, black box FEM full package magic, and workflows that made me want to hurl my computer out the window?
Let's look at some of the key philosophies that drive the development of Stride and how these concepts can help the engineering design process at any company.
-> Why plain text and hand calcs matter
-> Reviews in discrete chunks
-> Calcs at the heart of projects, and an open api platform to bring things together”
